Golioth is now a part of Canonical

We are thrilled to share that Golioth is now a part of Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu and a global leader in open source. We couldn’t be more excited to share this milestone and what it means for our customers, our team, and the future of IoT.

Why Canonical?

When we thought about the ideal partner for Golioth’s next chapter, the answer became increasingly clear. Canonical provides the foundational software for enterprises from the cloud to the edge. As we got to know the Canonical team better, we quickly realized that we share a vision for how connected devices should be built and operated.

The best Internet of Things (IoT) systems have massive scale, which means they span the information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) portions of large enterprises. Ubuntu is the preferred Linux OS for enterprises and developers. An OpenLogic survey found that 56.73% of organizations use Ubuntu and the same is true in IoT, where 41% of developers prefer Ubuntu (source: Eclipse Foundation). This existing foundation makes the integration of Golioth and Canonical natural and powerful.

Beyond the technical fit, what really drew Canonical and Golioth together was the alignment in how we think about building products and supporting developers.

Shared Values, Amplified Impact

Golioth and Canonical share the same DNA when it comes to our goals and culture. We’re both laser-focused on ensuring devices are up to date, secure, and have access to the most modern services available. We both bring together global talent to build exceptional open source tooling. In fact, Canonical pioneered many of the remote work advances that Golioth has followed in our own playbook.

Most importantly, we both believe in spreading knowledge of broadly available open source technologies and integrating them into world-class products that developers can rely on. This shared philosophy isn’t just about what we build–it’s about how we build it and who we build it for.

This cultural alignment is particularly meaningful because Canonical isn’t new to the IoT space–they’ve been thinking about these challenges for years.

A Complete Stack for Modern IoT

IoT products don’t use a single service, they pull together a variety of tools from embedded systems to Linux to cloud infrastructure. Together, Golioth and Canonical span that entire stack. We’re already seeing this in action: real-world deployments frequently pair Golioth-managed microcontrollers with Ubuntu Core–based edge devices and Canonical-backed cloud infrastructure.

This end-to-end capability makes Canonical a natural home for developers building and scaling IoT products designed to run reliably for decades. With this partnership, we’re not just combining technologies, we’re creating a seamless path from the smallest microcontroller to enterprise cloud infrastructure.

What This Means for You

The Golioth you know and trust will continue doing what we do best. Our core mission remains unchanged: connecting microcontroller-class devices to the cloud with a comprehensive suite of services and enabling engineers to design innovative IoT solutions. Everything you rely on today–our platform, our APIs, our commitment to developer experience–continues without disruption.

What does change is our capacity to serve you even better. Golioth is now backed by a mature, established organization with deep experience serving large enterprises. Whether it’s daily interactions with a global support team or longer-term considerations like regulatory compliance and government certifications, Canonical’s infrastructure and expertise are now available to support your projects with Golioth.

Most importantly, this wasn’t a hasty decision. We chose this path deliberately because we believe it positions Golioth to better serve you, our customers and partners, for the long haul. The IoT products you’re building today need to run for decades, and Golioth has the stability and resources to support that entire journey.

We’re eager to show you what this partnership means in practice, starting with our first joint appearance.

Meet Us at Embedded World 2026

We’re excited to join the Canonical team at the Embedded World 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany. You’ll find us at Hall 4, Booth 4-160. We’re scheduling meetings with partners and would love to discuss the future of Golioth within Canonical and what it means for your projects. Whether you’re a current customer, potential partner, or just curious about where we’re headed, we’d be delighted to connect.
