2024 was a whirlwind of new capabilities and experiences for the Golioth community. Today we’re highlighting the last year of happenings and talking about what we’ll see in 2025.
New Golioth Features
We released a range of new features this year, focused on seamlessly integrating the Golioth Cloud to a constrained device running the Golioth Firmware SDK. This enables us to deliver exascale computing features of the cloud to devices often running on battery and low data budgets.
- Usage Visualization: Constrained devices are designed that way for a reason. The owners of the device fleet want the devices to survive a long time in the field (long battery life) or to only occasionally report in (low data budget). It’s really important to understand what your device, project, and overall fleet is working with. So early in 2024 we launched the ability to view your usage, and continued to iterate on that capability throughout the year.
- One SDK to Rule them All: Prior to 2024, we maintained different SDKs for Zephyr and all other platforms. In February, we combined the two and unified the code base. This required integration work to maintain a similar interface between the RTOSes, and is backed by a strong testing framework, which is run every time we push a commit.
- Device Management should be Free: In March, we announced our switch to usage based pricing, which benefits our customers by only charging for what they use per device. This makes constrained devices a perfect fit for the Golioth cloud.
- Pipelines: In May, we officially launched Pipelines, which extends the previous Output Streams and opens up constrained devices to the rest of the broader internet. Many, if not all, of our future announcements were based on the framework that Pipelines allow, including the ability to push and pull data to the far reaches of the internet.
- Golioth for AI: Pipelines were extended and codified to include the new AI capabilities from 3rd party providers. In June, we began announcing more and more of these Pipeline integrations and regularly highlighted our customers that are using them to export data from constrained devices. This was further enhanced by a new block-wise upload on the Golioth SDK, allowing large binaries to move from device to cloud through the same CoAP connection. Taken together, this enables interesting new AI interactions from constrained devices.
- Golioth Solutions: We have a wide range of customers walking through our doors to build IoT Fleets. Golioth Solutions was launched in September to offer near-product designs that can serve a variety of vertical markets. We highlighted our Design Partners’ contributions to the Golioth Solutions Marketplace and also now offer short-run engagements directly from Golioth staff. This program will expand in 2025, with a focus on getting ideas out of notebooks and out into the field or production line.
- Cohorts and OTA Updates: At the end of our AI summer, we announced additional capabilities on our Over-The-Air (OTA) panel on the Golioth Console. This enhances how groups of devices are viewed, including adding reporting for multiple binaries and tracking changes over time. This is another area of the console receiving continuous updates and capabilities into 2025.
- Golioth Location Private Access: In December, we introduced a service that enables a unit to interact with a unified Golioth API for location services; users can feed in cellular and Wi-Fi data to get location returned from the cloud without waiting for a GPS lock. This approach can extend battery life, reduce hardware costs, and allow for quicker position acquisition. As this service enters general availability, we’ll see more applications and examples published on our blog and in reference designs.

New capabilities in 2025
So where are we going in the coming year? First off, we’re planning to crush it.
But more importantly, we’ll continue to focus on enhancing cloud capabilities for constrained devices. Golioth continues to serve customers working on devices that utilize cellular, Thread, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and even non-IP based wireless devices; we plan to continue extending capabilities to fleets and deliver value for our customers. We’ll also be focusing on our customers deploying fleets, building out tools that help to administer growing organizations and fleet sizes. Since our customers are often tasked with building better devices, in addition to more of them, we’ll focus on helping them to optimize for lower power and lower data usage as well.
